I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
I was torn between Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS that everyone is raving about, or Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 L that would go the extra 100mm.. I wanted to put the order in today, and so I was flipping between the interviews about the two lenses. Then I came to the part of 70-300mm review I've been passing, that mentioned that the tripod mount ring is optional (On an L-lens that goes to 300mm!!!!!). Well, before I put in the order, I thought, I'll just check how much extra would it be to use that lens on a tripod --- on Amazon.com: TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS.
I don't think so, Canon.
I just felt the interest in spending any money on Canon glass run out! Maybe I'll come back later and reconsider, but I know for sure that I will never want to even consider the 70-300mm again.

FWIW, the tripod mount is optional on both the lenses that you mention - neither the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS nor the 70-200mm f/4L IS include a tripod mount (only the f/2.8 versions of the 70-200mm zooms include the tripod collar).

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
B&H has the ring for $189.95
On this lens I can understand why they do not put it on. Its a compact lens and a lot of shooters would never even use it.
For those that wouldn

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
I can live without the ring. Unfortunately, I cannot find an alternative to the canon lens :( All the Tamrons, Sigmas and Tokina 80-400 left me wanting, and I guess I never truly wanted to consider any of them. I wish I could get Nikons with Canon mount ;)
I started this thread because I wanted to draw attention to the price of the ring, and the fact that Canon is creating a negative aura among the customers who are willing to pay the premium of L-glass, and I am not sure that is worth the money make by selling a few tripod mounts. My initial reaction was that since Canon hoods and Canon tripod mounts are this outrageously overpriced, then the same is probably true for their white glass, and it must be at least worth checking to see what else is out there. I didn

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
The 70-300L does not come with a tripod ring. Why is that a problem?
The 70-300 non-L does not have a tripod ring. Why has no one complained?
The Tamron 70-300, Sigma 70-300, Canon 75-300, etc. do not have tripod rings. Why has no one complained?
The Canon 200/2.8 II does not come with a tripod ring. Why has no one complained?
Why the complaints about the 70-300L? Because Canon thoughtfully designed it to be able to use a tripod ring in the rare case that you would want one. It doesn

I may be misunderstanding- but I think the op's problem is not that the lens does not come with a tripod ring, but rather that the ring costs $250 on amazon.

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
I have found that there tripod rings are over priced but there lenses are not that expensive. Yeah ther are cheaper alternitaves but they are either softer or have focus calibration issues. And even when they are a good value your not saving mega bucks either. The Sigma 24-70mm HSM is only a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Canon.

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
my phone company overcharge me almost every month. so i have to check the bill and call them every month.
my cable company added some services without my permission and i had to spend at least 7-8 hours on the phone to cancel and got the money back....... and then they did the same thing again.
remember how hard it was to cancel your AOL internet service?
oh, one more thing, remember they "had to" raise the price when Canon has the rebate come out.......
.............
yeah, those hoods and tripod rings are expensive but at least they charge what they ask for, Canon doesn't steal your money. compare to those thieves, Canon is still a good man[:D]

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
I handhold my 70-300L all the time without a problem as the weight is not an issue. Also, when attached to my tripod, it balances just fine as the lens is not that long anyway. If you have a decent tripod with a secure enough mount, you don

Re: I just completely lost interest in buying Canon lenses
Yeah, I actually needed to go to the store and take a look at one to realize how unexpectedly short and light it is. One just assumes a 70-300mm white lens _must_ be heavy and long, the fact that the review specifically mentions that the ring is not included just strengthens the assumption.
So I see having no tripod ring on this one is not going to be a problem at all... The ring is still outrageously overpriced, but luckily that is not my problem after all =o)
