Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
I didn't mean to hijack the Post your recent photo thread for Pixel Bender to take it over. I suggested that we start one just for that, so here it is. Not just to be used for Pixel Bender, but any kind of Altered, Manipulated or Bent image. Which can include Composites, Pixel Bender images HDR and Faux HDRs
To start off this thread, here is one of a young Red Tailed Hawk I took a while back, and recently ran through Pixel Bender.

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
Hey Tim...I really like that shot! Great Idea to start this alternate thread..you know I will have some submissions...at least until I leave for Kauai on Saturday.
Funny you should start this now after I threw a bunch of bended images on the best shots thread!!

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
This one is still wet, just finished my first painting.

I don't think being altered of bent helped me with the flowers though.

Tim, which filter in Pixel Bender did you use for the hawk?

Oil Painting, Which I believe is only available for the CS5 version of Pixel Bender.

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
Thanks, Tim.
Do you push the brush scale up high, and leave the other settings pretty much alone?
Also, do you use CPU more than GPU? I tried the GPU on a simple jpg, and it knocked my graphics card onto the ground.
I've been hoping for a hawk in flight, but they all seem to know that I want to take their picture, and no matter how stealth I am on creeping up to them, they have a sixth sense about me. [:(]

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
I usually keep the Brush Scale to the low side. But you have to play around with all the adjustments going back and forth between them all. You can make an adjustment with one and it will have an effect on another that you may not like. So I just play around with them until I get something that pleases me.
I use GPU, But if I use a full size Raw it might revert to using CPU automatically which can be very slow. But I haven't had any problems with it really.
For performance issues using CS5 here is a good read.

Hawks have good hearing and eye sight and do spook very easy. A lot of birds are like that! I did spook this one when I was slowly approaching it, just so happens when it took to flight it came across my field of view rather than away from it.

Thanks Gregg! I used the filter Stylize....Extrude and experimented with the settings to get the effect I wanted. I created a copy of the original on a separate layer and after applying the filter I used a layer mask to reveal my friend in the center of the image unaffected by the filter.

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
Thanks for the tip, Joel. Still working on finding out everything that CS5 has to offer...it's exhausting!!
Here's another "bended" picture. Mason and I at the car wash the other day.

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
Gregg, nice work. The oil paint filter really makes it look like it was painted. Very nice, indeed!
What were your settings for the various sliders? Thanks!

Re: Altered, Manipulated, Mapped or Bent
WOW! The above photos are incredible!!!
This is my first photo using Pixel Bender ...my computer doesn't like the process! But I was able to get thru one at least!
I just did this in whatever it defaulted to in Oil Painting. It would be extremely appreciated if you could put what your settings were at for newbies like me ...I would love to try to duplicate the process, if my computer will let me!
Here's the one I did but I'm not thrilled with these default settings....

Good idea, I will put up my settings from now on to new pics. I think I had all the other sliders in the oil painting filter at max or very near max and colorization was around 1.05 for my snail. Too bad it doesn't remember what was last used. Personally I don't like how this filter tends to pick up on any noise and make a very distinct pattern to the out of focus background from it very much. Maybe I will try to use a mask and take down the strength of the effect on the background so the main subject is more pronounced. But it might be just the right effect for some photos.

To smooth out the background there are a couple things you can do:
Turn the Brush Contrast Down; I usually keep it very low. Same with Brush Scale, I keep that turned down keeping the brush strokes small.

Good Idea with the cube. Have you tried any of the other shapes, or using Repoussé?
Seems you figured out how to make a cube and put pictures on each side. What do you need to know about 3D in CS5 Extended?
You can find some help on CS5 Ext 3D at Adobe TV
http://tv.adobe.com/search/?q=CS5+Extended+3D
There are a bunch of Tuts on YouTube also.

Planetphotoshop has some good tuts also, you'll have to search for any on 3D though.

Have you tried animations with CS5 Extended Yet?
