Assignment 22: Edit this! - Congratulations William!
Welcome to assignment 22! Assignment 21: Unique Perspective, was won by Freelanceshots and this assignment is what he created!
Assignment 22 is all about editing. Freelanceshots selected one of his images to be manipulated by you! Download the image, make it appear nicer, change it, add to it, use filters, HDR and anything else you want to add or change. In his words: "Do your best to improve this image, anything goes. Best one wins!"
The photo to be edited is:

This image is of a dam over the Arkansas River named Murry Lock and Dam where it was later updated to become a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Its a pretty big crossing where thousands of people use it each day for exercise.
Update!
Bryan (Freelanceshots) has selected his favorites for the assignment so it's now time to vote and declare a winner.
The finalists are:

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
I thought a landscape image would be best for this assignment as they are pretty popular with most of the members here. This image has a pretty wide dynamic range which should allow room for improvement and tweaking. Stretch it, crop it, perspective correct, turn down the highlights, bring up the shadows, play with saturation or try some HDR if that

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
This is my first go, I'm working on another one, but I spotted something in the trees on the ridge and just cropped it a bit.
It's amazing what you can come up with in PS5.[:D]

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
I'll have a go at it.
First I opened it in ACR and tried to recover as much of the blown out highlights(water reflections) as much as possible. Then opened it into CS5 and created three layer copies with layer masks to isolate the water, the bridge and hillside, and then the sky. Didn't need to do much to the sky, tried to reduce the glare on the water some more, and then brought out more detail in the bridge and hillside. Next a merged the layers back together and straightened out the horizon. Then I decided to give it a little shallower DOF using a gaussian blur gradient mask.

So Im also a beginner at editing pictures. Good assignment though. Tried a few things that were new to me. I may have another go at this picture but until then, here is mine.

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Oeh I'm loving it already! Quite some different ways of post processing already. I just loaded the RAW file myself. Time to practice PS5 and see if I can do some fancy moves [8-|]

I thought this image needed two major things, fix the water and remove the distractions in the sky (along with some general fixing). So I decided to just get crazy with the water. I think it worked well.

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Great assignment idea indeed! And very cool versions from all the participants so far. Here is my attempt, will try something different too but I thought this very surreal almost video game like look might be pretty cool:

Straightened the original RAW-file in ACR and played around a bit with various settings, then I used a selective color adjustment with a mask to color to water and after that went a bit overboard with the HDR Toning ;)

Can we know what camera/lens the picture was made with?
DxO can

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Great submissions so far!
I think what I'd most want changed about the original image would have been to try the shot on a brightly moonlit night. Here's my attempt to post-process it to something that shot might have looked like:

I first opened the RAW file in DxO (patham, for me it went straight to the 40D + Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM). There, I straightened and cropped slightly, recovered highlights then dropped the exposure by 2.67 stops, set the color temperature to 3000K with +40 tint, and applied a bit of HDR (along with DxO's automatic corrections for vignetting, distortion, sharpness, CA and noise). I exported as a TIFF and opened it in Photoshop. There, I selectively adjusted the hue-saturation-lightness (HSL) of the sky, cleaned up a few hotspot reflections, and removed the contrails and the bird. Finally, I selectively adjusted the HSL of the lights to 'turn them on' for the simulated night shot, reduced the image size and sharpened slightly.

DxO can't decide between two Sigma 10-20 lenses (the f3.5 one or the f4-5.6 one).
When I enabled Lens Correction in ACR it automatically picked the f-4-5.6

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
I love this thread. Everyone has a different view, and approach, to the image. I think Brian King's is close to my favorite.
And, we've all heard about "getting it right in the camera." I think that the original image was right "out of the camera," and proves that the statement "getting it right, out of the camera" leaves a lot to be desired. I'm inclined to believe that there is no such thing as "getting it right, out of the camera." Not yet, anyway.
Editing it made it look WAY better.
Great job, everyone. [Y]

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Ok, thought I'd try something alittle different. This is the one I'd like to be judged on ...unless I come up with something else of course! [:P]

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Lens used was the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 and a 40D.
ddt0275,
I was waiting for someone to use some tinting or a warming filter. nice touch with the addition of the frame.

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
Some pretty spectacular interpretations. Some I think would be far better once you got ride of those nasty airplane contrails that, for me, are very distracting.
I hope the winner divulges their tricks and how the accomplished everything. I am keen on learning.

Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
"Some I think would be far better once you got ride of those nasty airplane contrails.."
I actually imbraced it a bit and put the Death Star in the upper left corner along with lightsabers in the folks walking the bridge-thingy. I was gonna put it up and talk about "how gradients revealed it..", but the Star picture isn't mine and didn't think it was worth worrying over.
-
Re: NEW! - Assignment 22: Edit this!
I like the contrails!
They compliment the angles of the bridge and create a little bit of interest in an otherwise featureless sky.
