Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Good Morning, All!
At some point down the road, I may need to sell my 7d. Hopefully, I will be able to still use some of the $ toward another DSLR. I probably wouldn't get much for my 7d. Even though it is only a year and a half old, I tend to be clicker happy so the actuations are probably pretty high. The good thing is it still as of now, has 2 and a half years left of aBest Buy warranty on it.
Anyway, I don't know if and when I would need to put any adivice given into action but I was wondering ...what should I be looking at? I am on FM buy & sell constantly lately keeping an eye out for "WTB" ads and "FS" ads. I see a great deal of older models available for less than $1000. I just don't know if I should be looking at 5d's or 1dII's. I do tend to crop a great deal so I don't know how low of mp's I could get away with without it hurting the results of the photo or if I were to EVER sell something larger than a 5 x 7 (heck, I'd be happy at this point with selling a 5x 7)!
I owned a Rebel and sold it shortly thereafter because I just couldn't adapt to the small size and slowness of it ...I constantly was getting a "busy" signal ...remember, I get clicker happy :)
I am going to hold onto my 7d for as long as possible but dont' want a "good deal" to pass me buy either. I think the only lens I own that is for 1.6 is my Tamron but I am not sure. I could sell that if need be. But then again, I have been looking out for a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and/or a Sigma 30mm so I don't want to get too carried away with buying lenses that won't be compatible. OMG ...I hope my Sigma 70mm macro isn't just for a 1.6 crop :( I will have to look ...I love my 70mm!
On top of everything else, I have come down with a horrible flu bug ...so I am pretty foggy-brained at the moment!
Any advice for my future decisions would be greatly appreciated!

I agree. I was trying to sell my used 7D on FM for $1180(2year old 25k-30k clicks) without any response. so I sold my new 7D for $1350 instead.
I would not mind to use a rebel if I don't shoot a lot of moving objects otherwise I will try at least have a XXD.
good luck Denise!

The Sigma 70mm macro and 50mm f/1.4 are compatible with FF. The 30mm f/1.4 is a DC lens, meaning APS-C only.

Given that, reducing your MP count at the same time as reducing or eliminating the 'crop factor' seems like a one-two punch on IQ.
I'd say your best bet would be a used 50D - you keep live view and AFMA, similar ergonomics, still 1.6x crop, APS-C-only lens compatibility, and only lose 3 MP.
Good luck!

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Thanks, John! I never even looked closely at the details of the 50D. I will check it out and most definitely keep it in mind if & when the time comes to make a switch. In the meantime, I can watch the used price range of what people are posting it for and I know I would be safe still looking at less expensive APS-C lenses.

If you decide to takes John's advice about the 50D I have one I would trade you for your 7D plus I add cash for the difference. It probably has similar amount of use that yours has, it is 2 1/2 years old and is just a backup camera now. It is a good camera.
I can tell you though, switching to the older bodies your going to take a hit in IQ that will be noticeable to you. With the 50D I could get 8x10 size prints that were very nice. I had a harder time with the larger prints. But then that was when I was first starting out (limited skills) and I didn't have nearly as good of glass. The 50D's frame rate is slower but it isn't to slow in my opinion. It has an AF system similar to the 5D's and of course no video. You will miss the 7D's AF system as well, but this will be true on all the older bodies.
Good Luck with everything.

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Or a 60D, the AF is supposed to slightly better and you still get the great IQ of the new Canon sensor. The two biggest downside is it

I recently baught a 1DmkIIN from KEH. It has about 16,000 clicks on the shutter. DxOMark rates it equal to the 7D.

Pros: auto focus, shutter speed/frame rate, larger sensor, better low light ISO performance, sealed
Cons: heavy, 8MP, no micro-adj, do not work with EF-S.
I have enlarged prints as big as 24x30 from a ~6MP file and they look great.
Here is a 100% crop. Not as sharp as I would like but I think it is because the kitty moves soo fast.

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Thanks, HD for the offer on the 50d. I will keep it in mind as I rack my brain trying to figure out what to do next.
Fast Glass - Nobody can argue with the fact that your photos have top notch IQ so that camera is something to consider.
Mark - It always boggles my mind the fantastic IQ that you are able to capture with 8MP! I have many times considered this camera based on photos you shot using it!
I will look more closely at the bodies suggested over the coming days. Thank you for all of the suggestions and pointing out the pros and cons of each!

Just keep in your mind that the latest rumors are that the 7D will be replaced first half 2012.

Meaning I assume that the resale price of my 7d will probably go down when that is introduced?

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Yes, Raid, and at this time last year, the latest rumors stated that the 1DsIV was due out immediately, with the 5DIII following in early 2011. Take any 7DII rumors with a large grain of salt, say, asteroid-sized.

The plant that was damaged this spring, was the plant that makes the big telephoto's. So it is understandable. However the R&D division was up and running with no damage just days after the Tsunami.
I wouldn't believe anything from Canon Rumors. For two years they have been predicting that the 1Ds IV will be released in just a few months. At some point their prophecy will be fulfilled, not because of some magic insight, but because time presses on and things eventually happen.
I will make my own prediction, even if the 7D is replaced tomorrow, the price of the new 7D replacement will be 30% higher than the model now and the 7D prices now will remain unaffected.

Although Canon never made any sort of official announcement about delaying product launches until production was back to normal, even if they had it's irrelevant - back in July,Masaya Maeda (head of Canon's camera division) told Reuters that Canon had restored production to pre-quake levels by the end of June (not rumor - fact, here's the link to the Reuters article).

<div>Facts trump rumors. The 7D was released in 2009, not 2008. Also, while it's not incorrect to state that L lenses and 1-series bodies are made in Japan, in fact, almost all of the higher end products are made in Japan, including xD and xxD bodies and most lenses. The low-end consumer lenses (generally the ones with plastic mounts, like the EF-S 18-55mm, EF-S 55-250mm, and EF 50mm f/1.8 II), and some of the xxxD/xxxxD bodies, are made in Taiwan and Malaysia. But as stated above, Canon claims that production in Japan has been back to normal for quite some time.</div>

Exactly. Canon Rumors, like those 900-number psychic hotlines, should have a big disclaimer: For Entertainment Purposes Only. Every so often, someone will post something like, "I just sold my 24-70mm because you said a new version with IS was coming out in February, but it didn't come and now I don't have a lens for what I need." The thing is, CR predicted a new 24-70mm in February. Of 2009. And 2010. And 2011. But don't worry, I'm sure there will be one in 2012.
Rumors should not used to drive purchase decisions, since rumored products don't perform well before they are actaully available.

Why? Because once a new version is released, the old version stops performing as well? I wouldn't use resale value to justify that, either. Take Rick's prediction as an example, and I'll back that up with history - when the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II came out, it was substantially more expensive than the original, so retailers promptly raised the price of their remaining MkI units to full MSRP (about a $300 increase over street price), and correspondingly, prices on used copies of the MkI went up quite a bit.

Unfortunately the Canon Rumors may be true, and a 54mp 1Ds IV will be competing with this:
www.bhphotovideo.com/.../Hasselblad_70480542_H4D_50_Digital_SLR_Camera.html
And priced accordingly........
14 stops of dynamic range...I should sell all the GND's I just bought rightnow before its release...they may not be needed anymore.
Denice
We kind of de-railed your thread...but why not concider one of the new rebels. I use live view all the time with macro and landscape. With some of the boides mentioned you will loose that ability. Biggest negative I see is that you won't have the AF adjustment, but you could always pack up your Canon lenses and ship them to Canon and make them do it. The problem with the 5D or the 1D II is that I see them selling for not much less than you will get out of your 7D. If you are only going to gain a few hundred dollars it may not be worth it to you. You could sell your 7D and buy one of the new model rebels and pick up a fair amount. Biggest negative is that your memory cards and batteries won't work with them.
Hopefully you won't need to make this decission either way and things will work out.

Check batteries and Cards and figure those in the equation. Like I said in the other post, no live view. For me it is a must with macro. Not much of a gain over a camera that works for you.

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Denise,
Rick brought up some good points. Switching to the 1D MKII sounds like a sideways move at best and perhaps even a downgrade compared to your 7D. It doesn't sound like enough of a savings to make the switch and assume the risk of someone else's camera. It has a much higher acctuation rate than your 7D and I'm not sure how that camera is only 2 years old??
I think that your 7D will hold it's value longer.
Also, your EF-S and Digital Lenses won't work on the 1D MkII.
Try to hold onto your 7D if you can and I will always lend you some lenses. I'm serious!

Maybe, Rick. But if it were about MP alone, the 7D should be just about as good as the 5DII. Is it? I think sensor size makes a big difference, and no matter how many MPs get crammed into a FF sensor, MF will still have better IQ. BTW, what's up with the "<span>Wide ISO Range (100-800)" on the Hassy? It's so wide, it's nearly as wide as the 100-1600 of the original Canon D30... ;)

Yep, sorry , Denise! Personally, I don't think changing from a 7D to a 1DIIN or 5D is a good idea - minimal cost recovery, loss of EF-S compatibility when you have EF-S/DC lenses, and loss of Live VIew seem like bad trade-offs when you'd get $200-300 net at best.

Thank you so very, very much for the generous offer, Rich! I am hoping and praying this situation I'm in doesn't come downto having to part with all of my lenses. It looks like I will hold on to my 7d as well. Downgrading doesn't look like it would be a wise decision. At least with what I sold so far in lenses, I can still buy some muchless expensive used replacements and still have $ left over.I can resell them later for the same price if need be. I will hang on to as much as I can for as long as I can, until I must give it all up completely.
Thank you everyone for all the suggestions and wisdom ...I think panic attacks are starting to take over my sensible thinking at this point so I appreciate everyone here looking out for my best interests!!! The gov't. report just posted for Sept. is enough to kill any glimmer of hope!

Re: Advice Needed Once Again ...this time on camera bodies
Denise
To go backwards to a 50D (downgrade your equipment) will not help and as pointed out replacing your batteries and CF cards will a hidden cost.
Try not to make any drastic or impulsive changes in your life, these never help.
Do not limit yourself to what you have done before (work that is), broaden your horizons. Whenever you change job you must always look to reinvent yourself because you now have more skills and experiences to offer.
Neuro
Thank you for correcting the design date of the 7D, I was working from memory (now close to the design life).
All
My reason for buying equipment like lenses and bodies when they are first released is not a technology issue but design life. I know a number of colleagues who have had issues with camera parts failing (shutters and apertures). While none of these where Canon (Sigma, Tokina and Nikon) you should always take this into account when thinking about buying both new and secondhand. While my camera (350D) doesn't have a shutter counter it has a design life of 50K. As I have over 25K keepers and considering how bad a photographer I am, that can be multiplied by 3 as a minimum. I have taken 2K shots of one bird only to keep <20 (taxidermy was invented for photographers who try to shoot a Superb Fairy Wren).
As for the price dropping when the new version is announced, I’m in Australia, where the prices drops on the old version before the new one is announced and then increased afterwards. I brought me 70-300L in July for $1,830 so as the exchange rate improved (both for USD and Yen) the price should be going down, wrong it’s now almost $2,000.
My purpose in providing the link to CR was the Canon CPS event on the 18th (this is not a rumor), not to provide any credibility to anything else on this site. What this site is good at is providing one source of Canon news around the world as well as Patent filing info. Canon have posted a number of patents for the 24-70 and lately a 100-400. If Canon are releasing an upgrade the patent comes out before the lens, if they are releasing something new, the Patent is released after the lens is announced (200-400 1.4TC).
The problems for Canon are not just the issue of direct damage from the Tsunami but its impact on Canons suppliers and infrastructure. Canon is still months behind on new product production and we should cut them a lot of slack when it comes to product announcements. If I remember correctly this one coming on the 18th will be the first since the tragedy. So there may be something new that impacts their product line and 7 days is not long to wait.

It is more likely an announcement event for new DSLR's will happen on October 26, 2011at the New Your City meeting "A moment captured in time, Exactly as you Envisioned". At least when I got my invitation from Mitarai and he said "here is what you have been waiting for"
