I took this morning, 7D, 1/40s, iso400 (it was a grey pre-dawn shot). DPP raw->jpg in standard style, no colour enhancements or ALO, default NR.
(i'm going to take better samples tonight)

My first lens was a Konica Hexanon 40 mm f/1.8 (yes, I'm so old), an outstanding lens. It was the same size and weight of this, also had six elements.

I was sort of considering one simply for the small size - gripped body/1D X with this lens would fit in my Lowepro Utility Bag 100 AW, not menaingfully thicker than the camera body, and the whole thing would fit in my computer satchel. That means I could take a dSLR on an overnight trip whereas I wouldn't be able to take one with a standard lens. The cheap doesn't bother me, as long as the IQ is good - and it seems to be, both the MTF chart and more importantly the images so far.
Actually, I was wondering how many people would buy this anyway because it's so cheap. It's definitely going to impact sales of the 50/1.8 as the 'my first cheap-ass prime' imho.Quote:

My very non-scientific comparison shots - as everyone has said, this is a great little lens. Using a lowly 60D, I am really impressed. (have also used the 50 f1.8 and 35 f2.0...the 40 f2.8 is much better IMO so far).

If you are looking for reasons to buy this lens here are a few:
- $199 body cap - that can actually take (great) pictures.
- Can be carried in your pocket (the lens, not the camera!)
- Get people to laugh at your camera while you take their picture - no "cheese" needed.
- You can actually walk into Best Buy and get one.
- Hardly any glass to attract dust.

Shot a roll of film on the EOS 3 over the weekend, nothing but the shortyforty attached. Damn that makes a fine street camera, with the eye-control focus it's more "Point and Shoot" than even the fanciest P&S cameras today.
Got the film developed and scanned it last night, thought i'd share this one. Still a work in progress, i'm not sure how I should treat my film shots. For a start, it was expired no-name-i've-heard-of iso200 colour film. Then I left it near my log-fire for a month, to expire it even more, before I shot it. I was surprised that I got anything useful at all, actually.
So, scanned, bit of USM to make up for scanning, the blues were half the strength of the other colours so boosted them up (still a bit of yellowing left). Bit of contrast curving, then saturated the Yellow, Red, Orange, and Green a bit to bring up the streamers.
I might go and re-edit it again later, but still not bad I reckon (although your definition of 'bad' may differ from mine, it's definitely 'fun')

Well, the MTF from canon certainly looked promising, and PZ has pretty much confirmed it, razor sharp centres wide open and slightly better again stopped down a bit. I'd be a bit concerned about stop-down-focus-shift, but from f/2.8 to f/4 at anything normally framed (like 2+ metres away), that's going to be a non-issue.
Now the real dilemma, next time I want to take out the Nodal Ninja for some spherical panoramae at f/5.6, do I take the pancake or the Samyang?
Have just been looking at the ISO charts for this lens. To say that I'm surprised is an understatement. While I wouldn't use the "Razor Sharp" term it is very good for such a low cost lens.
OK Canon, does this mean a new Pancake family?
My definition of 'razor sharp' is anything that outresolves the 5D2 sensor, at least in the centre at f/4-5.6, at PZ's 3700 mark.
Like the TS-E 24, 24/1.4L, the Samyang 35, the 14/2.8LII, the 85/1.2LII (almost).
I'm happy putting the 40mm Pancake in the same basket as those ones, and it's even cheaper than the Samyang and has AF too.
I've got the 35 1.4L and the 50 1.4, so I also don't need it. However, I have used the 35L mostly at state fairs, or other night photography situations, where I wanted something wider than the 50. I can imagine using the 40 pancake lens for the night shots. It will give me nearly as wide as the 35L (which I stop down to 2.8 anyway) and won't stick out of my 5D2 nearly as much. Hey, for $200, what's not to like?

I just pulled the trigger on one of these cheap things also. I have the 35 f/2 and have never been happy with both the IQ and its focusing speed. I think if i like this, the 35mm is gone. I never need the extra stop anyway.

Looks like I'm going to have to spend more money... again.
Don't know about y'all but I felt as though the af speed was Considerably slower with this compared to evn my 50mm 1.8. I had a chance to try one out in Kansas city, af speed is why I didn't pull the trigger.
I'm sure Canon was trying to find the balance in price and features. I'm glad to see a lens less than $15,000 :)

Well received my 40 in the mail today. Hoping they'll allow me to take it to the concert tonight and see how it works in low light. I would have to say that the focusing is faster than the 35mm f/2 but definitely not as fast as something with a USM or even the Af motor of the 50mm f/1.4. It is pretty quick and almost quiet. If I get anything good for pictures in the next day or two I will post some.

This isn't really a fair fight, but have you used any tamron lens? If so, is it about the same focus speed as the 28-75ish lens they offer?
I own the 17-50mm DI II (non-vc) version and use that on a regular basis. I would have to say that it is as fast or maybe just a little faster than the tamron. Seems to grab focus a hair quicker. If racking it from one end to the other, it doesn't have super speed but quick enough. It usually locks on pretty quickly and doesn't hunt. That was what I was looking for. Maybe the STM motor makes it seem a little faster because it doesn't buzz quite as loud. Who knows. We're talking about fractions of a second. I used it at the concert tonight in terrible light and thought it did ok. I believe I will be keeping it. Little upset that I forgot to press the record button while attempting to video my kid dancing to a song, but all in all, the night was good.Quote:
