Congrats Nick - Assignment #64b: "Group f/64"

On behalf of clemmb, I would like to present the finalists for Assignment 64b: "Group f/64"

For me, this has already been a history lesson. The original Group f/64 was organized in 1932 by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Willard Van Dyke, Imogen Cunningham and others to promote "pure photography." The group was in response to artistic and soft focus photography that was becoming popular at the time and selected f/64 (the narrowest aperture available for the large format cameras available in 1932) to "celebrate rather than disguise the medium's unrivaled capacity to present the world as it is."

I'm not in charge of the assignment, but I don't know why it wouldn't be. It sounds like a reasonable concession.

Great to see so much interest in the topic. People are always welcome to interpret an assignment as they see fit. But perhaps Mark can provide a bit more guidance as to what he is looking for selecting the finalists. Are we to emphasize the "pure photography" or the large DoF?

From scrolling through the images I've seen referenced to Group f/64, my impression is natural looking post-processing, maximized/large DoF, and a general landscape theme.

I am looking for a natural looking post-processing, maximized/large DoF, and a general landscape theme. Can be B&W, Color, Sepia, etc...
If you can actually shoot @ f/64, that would be a plus.

When I first processed this one, I actually thought about the Group f/64 (although I am not claiming to be that good).

I thought I would throw another out there, but I will stick with the first for judging. Not quite f/64, but diffraction seems to be less of a problem on an 8X10 format camera.

I like your Ontonagon River example... I know that section really well. I have spent a lot of time along that section of the river shooting, and have some very similar shots. It was nice to see that someone from Texas can enjoy the north woods of Michigan.:)

Actually I have never been. The only examples I had were from my film days so I grabbed those from the net :rolleyes:

Agreed, very nice shot. I was on the fence between Nick's shot and Pat's for the longest time. Both are frame worthy. I finally went with Nick's because of the drama it entails, but it was not a decision I made lightly. Pat, your shot is also excellent. It has tremendous depth and a very calm feel to it. I can almost smell the balsam and hear the water. Very nice indeed.
