As described by Jonathan:

There was a good thread recently about using prime lenses, so I thought it would make for a good assignment topic. Call it "Prime Time". The assignment is to post a picture where you intentionally chose a prime lens to get a result that wouldn't normally be possible with a zoom lens. Perhaps it is because you used a wide aperture (f/1.4 for example) for narrow depth of field or low-light conditions, or perhaps you wanted to exploit the inherent sharpness of your prime lens and get a photo with a better IQ than you could with one of your zooms. I'm going to exclude macro images and super-telephotos shots from this assignment, but tilt-shift images are welcome.

I choosed my 40mm f/2.8 STM prime lens because... i got nothing else under that focal range with me (my brother broke the 18-55 a few days before)!

Entry - "Happy Hornet"
I took my fisheye on a recent family vacation and used it to make the Hudson Hornet smile while this lovely lady was sitting on his hood. I initially took it to take some landscape shots, but ended up using it for a bunch of different family style photos. Only wish I would have brought some type of flash since my M doesn't have a pop up for fill.

I specifically bought the EF 24mm f/1.4L so I could get some decent night time landscapes. When I go out at night I can travel light with just my camera, tripod, 24mm lens, and an intervolometer. This lens along with a good high ISO capable camera can get some terrific night shots, and keep the shutter speed low enough to get nice stars without star trails. I was hoping to get more stars in this shot, but the full moon was to bright... so I used the nice moonlight to provide the lighting.

Also taken with Sigma 50mm Art, but for this I stacked two images - one taken at f/8 to get all of the headstones as sharp as possible and one taken at f/1.4 for the blurred background.

What I really wanted to do is a time laps with the Milky Way or northern lights over that waterfall. I have been think about that shot for some time now, but the full moon coinciding with when I could be there kind of put the damper on that. I thought of doing a time laps anyway, but my wife was with me and I wanted to make another stop... so I decided not to spend the night there.

I did a time laps of the milky way over a lake once. I spent most of the night and got the milky way sweeping across the sky so it was just coming out from the edge of the tree line and out over the lake. Then it got cold and my battery died. That was kind of a wasted night, but bought an extra battery after that.[emoji2]

Edit: Neglected the rest of the info. Used the prime for the colour rendition primarily as it was a cloudy day with rain coming and going. Wanted to keep as much of it as I could.

Taken on a business trip to San Francisco (terra cognita as I grew up in the Bay Area), I chose the TS-E for this shot to correct the verticals (and for a sharper image than the 16-35 II I also had with me would provide).

This one is a recent shot, taken on a nighttime photography workshop that was my first attempt at astrophotography. I bought the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 to give it a go (actually, I tried two copies, one was very soft on the left of the frame, the second copy was excellent).

I used a prime, the 100 mm f2.8 L macro, for the minimum focus distance. I had taken several shots with the 70-200, but could not get this shot until I used the 100L.

This shot was taken with the Rokinon 14 mm f/2.8. Selected for the uwa perspective and f2.8 aperture allowing a long enough exposure to capture the milky way.
