Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Hi guys,
<span style="font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;"]Like taking portrait shots? Just post them and share with us!
This is, as I consider, one of my best portraits I've ever taken. On campus of University of Toronto (University College Building), Canada, in early 2008. Feel free to comment and give suggestions [:)]

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I did these emotionless static whitened portraits for a film festival campaign in 2008:
I basically broke every rule of portrait photography LOL.
(PS I see that the first guy and the first girl are whiter in the lo-res jpg conversion than they are in print. All photos have white faces but here on my computer all facial marks and details are subtle, but intact).

And here is a portrait I did of a Dutch fashion designer:

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I hope this is OK. I like taking portraits, but I don't shoot people. [:O]

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Thanks Madison. I shot that with a Vivitar 285HV bounced into a reflective silver umbrella placed low and on each side of the subject (so two flashes total). I triggered them with Cactus V2s receivers. At f/7.1 and 1/200 sec, I killed alot of the ambient light to give him a more menacing look. He's actually a big goofball. ;-)

What do you mean, you don't shoot people? I thought that was a picture of my Uncle Bob...
Well, even if it isn't Bob, it's a great shot. I'd be interested to know what focal length and f.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Awesome, Alan.
I normally don't like black backgrounds (prejudice maybe came from macro), but this works perfectly. I love how the baby's face is in full light and the woman (mother, I assume) is in a bit of shadow. I also like the just visible hanging hair. Finally, I like the composition. I always go way tighter, so when I see people pull back and include a plain background and have it work so well, I think "I never would have thought to do that" :)
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
John, thanks.
Since I knew the mother was going to wear a black dress, I switched to a black background. I used a soft box on the right, to highlight the baby's face, and a reflector to the left to lighten the mother's face just a bit, but to also keep it in the shadows, as you pointed out. I wanted her hand in the picture and I told her to look at a fixed object, to help give her a contemplative look. The baby cooperated, fortunately, since she was looking all over the place up to this point.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Here's a couple of my favs from my nearly 3000 photo library in Lightroom, who knows how much more I had before I got Lightroom. And I use the amazing 85mm f/1.8 USM for just about all instances whenever I'm shooting people.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Tom: sometimes when subjects are camera shy or don't even make contact with the viewer at all, gives photographs something special like your first shot. It's very good. There's a vulnerability and shiness (is that a word in English) that you can feel. I like that shot a lot actually.

XSi 85mm f/1.8 @ 2.2,1/2000, ISO 800.
In my view, this shot is an example of wrong ISO and shutter speedbeing overcome by lucky timing and composition.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
kitaoka, this is an outstanding portrait shot. Great job. That 50 mm lens does a fantastic job. Of course, the 1D-Mk 3 helps!

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Here is a picture I took of my father our first day on the beach in Kauai(Brennecke's Beach). Taken with my old 5D, 24-105(very sharp copy thanks to Lensrental.com), 88mm @f4, 1/125th. A little PP in Lightroom. He hardly ever smiles(just kidding), so he does take really good photos, especially with my little man!!

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Thank you Alan. I originally shot Eugene's hands holding an orange as you can see in the color image I have uploaded. But his face is just as remarkable as his hands.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Gregg, that's also a fantastic shot. That rugged look gives the image a real personal touch.
And, kitaoka, the orange pic: wow! It really tells a story.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
My God: Kitaoka, Gregg: what amazing work. Breathtaking portraits.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
:yup...
inspiring, and depressing.... [:)]
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Colin....why depressing??
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Not truly depressing....
I'm haphazardly going through and organizing my files, and one thing I notice is that I actually am getting better at this. More consistently decent shots, more often 'good' shots. Far less utterly crappy shots.
However, since seeing a lot of the work put up on this forum, it makes it very clear that there's a LOT to learn. Now, this isn't entirely a depressing thing, as it's an opportunity to expand, grow, etc. That really is a good thing. OTOH, it dawns on me, "Damn, I've just begun to really dig into this."
So, I didn't mean it in a bad way, but rather a compliment. Truly terrific images. I'll dig around and see if I can pony up a contribution of my own, though it's kind of hard to follow THAT. (yes, that was yelling) [:)]

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Okay, Colin. Here is something a little easier to follow [:D]
My dad reading Junie B Jones to my daughter. Candid, natural light.

1D Mark IIN 85mm @ f/1.8 iso 640 1/500 (yeah, I could have gotten away with way lower iso... why don't cameras have reasonable auto iso? Or is it just Canon?)

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Sometimes a family portrait can be set in a non traditional way. All shot with Canon gear including a ST-E2 and a EX580 through a small softbox.

On other occasions, props can make a dramatic impact on the portrait.

Canon 1Ds Mark III, 85mm 1.2 II @ f1.4, ISO 100, 1/125, fill flash
I love the 85mm Mark II lens. Whenever I'm doing portrait photography it's on my camera.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
My girlfriend and I were goofing around at the miniature golf course. I had my 40D with a plastic EF50mm f1.8II lens, and a 430EX II flash. Av mode with a -0.33 EV, ISO 400, f/2.8, 1/25th second, hand held. Here's the

A remote shutter release would have been nice for this. (Its actually me in the picture, yeah self timer!) Anyone know anything about the $5-$18 remote releases from like China on ebay?
