Post your best bird shots!
Continuing the "post your best... theme", post your best bird shots!
I'll start with this one: (It's resized so sharpness is not as good as in the original)
Green Heron, shot at a Japanese Garden in FL.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
This's going to be my favorite thread [:-)].
This is the most recent image that I made. I believe I posted in the "Post Your Best Nature Shots" thread.

Well, It's not a Nate shot, But I was pretty happy with this one, the Heron, let me get within 30 feet of him.

it's pretty darn good though.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
I think this is a black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax). It was sitting very intently by the edge of the pond, staring into the water. Although shot at the zoo, it was wild (unbanded).

Love this shot wicker---the focus on the eye is great.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Really great shot Nate - truly amazing. The other shots are also great guys, really great job.
Nate, we've asked before and if I'm not mistaken we haven't got your reply (you probably missed it).
So I'll try again: generally, how far are you from the birds?

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Hi Oren, sorry I missed your question![:)]. That's a tough one to answer, I generally don't pay attention to how close I am to the subject, because my subjects are ranging from giant white pelican to tiny bufflehead, so I just try to fill the frame as much as possible, I also try not to post any images that are over 50% cropped.
The osprey shot is about 75% of the original image and the following GBH shot is fullframe

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Some great shots here......
Nate; in general, what metering method do you use?
Juvenile Cooper's Hawk hand held shot w/40D, 100-400 at 400mm, f10, ISO 200, shutter 1/500th, metering spot.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
90% of the time I use Manual Exposure and when I use Aperture Value I use Evaluative Metering.
Kool Cooper Hawlk shot Bill, good exposure, pose and head angle, background too clutter though
Nate,

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Thanks for your input Nate.
I agree about the background, but I like to let the viewer of my pix to know what surroundings I'm in also. LOL When I print this pic I'll PS the background for a more pleasant bokeh.
Here's one taken a few weeks ago in a Raptor workshop I participated in....I rented the 70-200 2.8 IS for this shoot. As you can see the pix' bokeh (untouched) is much better, but it was a controlled setting and I didn't have to traipse thru brambles to capture the Kestrel. I feel as if I was cheating. [;)]

All right, so I posted this before. But I don't have a camera, so can't take any new pictures right now. This picture is uncropped.

Finally got a good shot of a male wood duck, these guys along with the madarin ducks are very skittish, it's tough to get a frontal shot of them. Thanks for viewing everyone!

I know I've posted this somewhere before. This was spring of 2009. view large to see feather detail
Canon AV-1 with either 200 or 400 speed FujiFilm. An FD mount 50mm 1.8 was used. I'm not sure what the aperture or shutter speed was.
I consider myself lucky to snag a shot such as this. haha. Great photos everyone!
Itheone, I specifically like your bluebird in the backyard!

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Not exactly up to the standard of the rest of the pictures here, but here is one of my favorites of a heron taking flight.

Any comments/criticism welcome.

Did you resize it to 800 pixels wide? I believe that is the maximum width that will post.
The part that was shown was nice though [H].

Funny, I was just thinking "nice unusual composition" on the owl pic. Oh, well... [H]

Wow, Nate! That is a great shot. The saturation and sharpness are just so intensely beautiful. I really enjoy your shots, each better than the last. This may be one of my favorites so far. Almost unfair, the seemingly endless supply of avian species available to you within reach of the mighty 500 f/4.

I very well could be horribly mistaken, but I think the width limit is 600px. :)

It is 800 pixels. The only reason I know is that I received a message on this when I joined this forum (very recently). It says "For display in the forums, size your images to 800px (or less) in width. The limits for uploading files to the site are currently set to 1024k max per image and 5120k max overall". [;)]

This was taken with my 600mm with a 2X and cropped about 25%! Thats a hell alot of millimters!
Cheers,
John.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
John,
That's a helluva shot at that focal length. How did you get it so stable? Was the shutter speed super high?
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
All I was using was a 25$ tripod thats so unstable that I kept it unlocked and used 1/500th of a second and pulled it down one stop so noise won't take over the image. I got very good at handholding this lens! It was over cast so there wasn't that much light.
