I saw this bird over the weekend in my yard but it would not come close to my feeders so this is not a good image but it is a species I have not seen before and I still am not sure of it's ID. Can anyone help?

Joel....looks to me to be a female black headed grosbeak.....my only doubt is your home isn't in their normal range.

I looked closely in my Peterson's and I considered that but could not convince myself although I think it is a grosbeak or finch
I am wondering if it's an immature male rose-breasted grosbeak....they migrate through here.

you're probably right.....when I looked at the RB grosbeaks, the first years had a chest w/faint red.....which should becoming visible this far into the season.
But then, it could be a 2nd brood hatchling which would mean no faint red and a more tawny chest this time of year.

Here we have my first "Codibugnolo"!
There were five or seven of them moving like crazy inside a big tree, all in penumbra so catching one of them was a work of patience and reflexes!

Bird and bee
Hard to follow some of the recent posts, so here is something more light-hearted that I recently re-edited.
