Kayaker - That looks like a real "cool" place, and a lot people are enjoying it.
M_Six - The red streek is neat.
Here are a couple from yesterday:

7D, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm, 1/4 sec, f/16, ISO 100
@Kayaker - I agree, it looks like a really fun place! I vaguely recall seeing that white stuff on the ground before but not so far this winter in Wisconsin!!
@ Pat - Both of those shots are really beautiful! Great composition!

Nice shootin' Pat and M-Six....
The New Hampshire Presidential Primary is today and I spent part of the weekend driving around to listen to the candidates. For those international members, the USA's presidential election is next November and right now we are in the process of having each party (Republican and Democrat) select the candidates that will square off against each other in the general election. New Hampshire happens to be home of the first primary (Iowa had a caucus a week ago). I tried to see everyone, but only successfully saw three.
Of course, I took my camera. :D
Rick Santorum: He got a big bump by coming in second in Iowa. The first time I tried to go see him I couldn't even get into the auditorium. This time, I showed up early, but the fire marshall said the hall was violating fire code so it was moved outside. Lots of interest, but also I heard a lot of grumbling in the crowd.

Nice series Brant, what a system you guys have. It seems strange that the system can possible bypass a person with the right political skills, but does not have the best fund raising machine behind them. Some great photo opportunities, though.
Rest in Peace

I have been a little bit "offline" for a few weeks, but it's very nice to get back and scroll through the latest additions in this thread. Great shots!
As M_Six ends with a great shot I'll add some similar ones that I took.
As you might know the Netherlands where occupied by the Germans during World War 2. In 1945 the allied forces put an end to that. In my region the liberation army consisted from mainly Canadian troops. A lot of them died during the fights and for those a special war cemetery was made. 1394 soldiers are buried there.
On the night before Christmas local children place candles at each of the 1394 graves to commemorate the fallen soldiers. It was quite an amazing and at the same time a very impressive sight. A sight that made me speechless.

Here's a shot of my son un-retouched (as you can see by the bit of apple on his face). I've reduced the number of pixels each way by half.
I was shooting my older boy playing football so I was shooting JPEG only. I'd love to have the RAW file for this shot. That said, this is still my favorite photo so far.
T2i, 70-200 f/4 L IS
f/5.6 1/500 sec. f=185mm ISO 200, Aperture Priority (don't know if EXIF data comes across when I upload a photo).

Great shots, Jan. Speechless indeed.
@Chad, Ahh that made me smile, really nice intimate portrait, feels a bit like we are being let in on a secret, welcome to the forum.
@Jan, beatiful light and framing.
@Msix, beautiful sky evocative image, fair bit of black/dark area below the headstones, perhaps crop???
@Chad - That is a wonderful capture of your son! Very cute little boy!
Well, even though we have been havig some very unseasonably warm weather so far this winter and our first snowfall is finally happening tomorrow, the winter duldrums are still starting to set in ...or maybe it is the unemployed duldrums!
Anyway, its been awhile since I put my flashes to work & I thought a few flower shots might be in order before the blizzard hits ...

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to go for a ride in a helicopter. I was billed as the "trip photographer" (not meant for scenic shots, but we were doing some survey work and needed some pictures to support the routing of a proposed road.) My first trip in a helicopter so I was thrilled to get the chance! Here are a few shots. Not the greatest, but I was fighting the glare/reflection off the windows as it was just a bit too cold (-12degC or 10degF) to open the windows for pictures!

Some nice pictures on this thread lately.
Denise - I really like the Rose.
M_Six - Your model seems a little stiff.
Stephen - The helicopter ride would be really cool (especially if you opened the window:))... lucky guy.
A few deer shots from today. At least the grass didn't get in the way of all of them!

Here is an edited shot I took of someone I stopped and asked if I could take their photo, she was less nervous about it than I was.

Steve - I like it. I have never been able to do that (walk up to them ask to take their pic).
Wonderful shot, Steve!! I wish I could work up the courage to ask people if I could take their photo! The b&w on this one looks really good!
Today was a really dark, gloomy day so this shot is much noisier than I would like. Also, the deer are really starting to get too close for my comfort! I have gotten pretty freaked out a few times by mama deer coming at me a tad too quickly! From now on though, I think I need to bring much shorter lenses!

Biodiversity Portal of Singapore has asked me to put one of my other deer photos on their website. Only problem is, I have to include text about white-tailed deer (200 words or less). Guess I better brush up on my knowledge of them other than that they like to get their pictures taken ...LOL!
When you are good looking and friendly it's easy to go up to strangers and ask to take their photo.... I don't know how I get away with it.
This is the shot I started with before I gave it all that grainy B&W treatment. Did I ruin it or not?

Steve
Steve: I like your B&W treatment. No I don't think you ruined it at all.
Thank you! Oh goodness, a few hundred yards!? In this park there are hundreds of deer and they will pretty much walk within a few feet of you (closer if you let them)! I've had one walk right along side me down the road in the park. There have just been so many people feeding them when they shouldn't be that most of them don't fear humans. I would like to get a nice shot of a buck but I haven't spotted one yet.
@ Steve - I very much prefer the b&w version and the application you used is outstanding!
This is a shot I took today..It was snowing and really cloudy at the lake I was at. This is my favourite shot out of all the shots I made...
http://francongphotography.wordpress.../burnlake1-12/
Hmm, I'm with you - as a biologist, I don't agree with feeding them but they sure are beautiful animals.
On the other hand, the mule deer around here usually will let you get pretty close 20 - 30'.
About waiting for a buck....at this time of year, they're starting to shed their antlers. Apparently anywhere from January - April then they start growing the next set over the spring/summer/fall. Then you'd have to wait for september/october...But good luck!
Here's a shot from a few Christmases ago. Taken with my old Rebel XT and the kit 55-200 @200.....not the best lens or pic but it sure was exciting sneaking up on this guy...! My heart was pounding so hard I wished that I had 4-stop IS on this plastic zoom, lol

Damian
Thanks Damian and Denise.
You two D's are chasing deer all over the place, nice mule?? deer. Is that what you call a male deer?
Love the deer shots....
Steve...didn't ruin the shot at all, to my eye, they are very different. I do prefer the original. It has some sort of timeless innocence element to it.
Hi Steve. The mule deer is one type of deer species that inhabits these parts. I'm no expert but here in Western Canada, there are 4 main large "Deer"-type mammals: White-tailed deer, Mule deer, Elk, and Moose (there's also Caribou in Canada but they prefer the far north latitudes). On Vancouver Island I've seen smaller "stunted" versions of the white-tail/muley type.
Cheers,
Damian
I would love to get a shot of a mule deer!!
My old boss had the head of one on his office wall that he shot (literally) and it stared at me all day, every day ...quite eerie! I thought he had a camera inside to keep an "eye" on me ...LOL! I would decorate the antlers with Christmas ornaments which didn't thrill him at all!
@Damian, thanks for that, only find them in zoos around here.
@Denise, your old boss does not have too many supporters on this site, his insensitivity does not surprise me.
[QUOTE=Steve U;63198@Denise, your old boss does not have too many supporters on this site, his insensitivity does not surprise me.[/QUOTE]
Ditto---If it was me, I would hang dirty underwear from his prize antlers---but that wouldn't be too ladylike for you---how about just some sardines in his a/c vents----they should have time to ripen between now and spring .
Jan, amazing shots. As a Canadian, thank-you.
Thanks. Also thanks to everyone who has replied. I am so busy(mainly in my head:confused:) that I forget to reply...
@ChadS... Beautiful shot of your son! I believe if you double click on the image, you can change the image settings.
@M_Six... I like the composition of your shot as well as the colors.
@Stephen...man those aerial shots are very cool! Seems like a great job you've got there:D
@Denise... Those deer-shots are great. I know one place where they aren't shy as they normally are and it seems like cheeting, but they still look amazing. I personally like the shots where it seems like they do their own thing and don't bother at you.
@Steve...wow man, great portrait. I thought it was too dark when I saw it here, but a little larger version on Flickr looks great! It has a whole different feel to it than the original.
Enough talk. Sunday me and my girlfriend went for a hike with the camera's. Hadn't done that for a long time. After the hike we got to a glider site where the sun was nicely setting:

Great pics Denise. I like the second Canada geese shot....I was wondering where they suddenly went! We just started a cold snap in southern BC - -25 C and a stiff wind. Wind chill of -35 C....not doing too much outdoor shooting these days:eek:.
