You do not have to buy the kit lens. The 50mm f/1.8 and 55-250mm f/4.5-5.6 will work just fine. Although you may find that you want something wider. 50mm on the 450D is not very wide....

Do you have any issues with barrel distortion or pincusion with the 24-105? According to the review here there is some on the 24-105. Is it very noticeable? It is VERY apparent on the 17-85 below...
