Keep in mind that the Sony-branded Zeiss glass is crazy expensive, compared to similar Canon L lenses...
Great review (as usual). I felt like I was all cool with my shiny LNIB 24-105L until I read this :)
The size of the image circle covered by the new TS-E lenses is very interesting...it probably...
It's all about continuous upgrading...buy something, sell it for nearly what you paid for it, use the proceeds to buy something that costs just a little more. I've gone from a 20D with kit lenses to...
I looked at the Manfrotto 055XPROB and the Feisol CT-3441S, and ended up with the Feisol CT-3441S. No regrets at all...the Feisol is a solid tripod. It's very light, and relatively easy to work with....
Using a zoom lens for macro is tough...I've done it with my Sigma 100-300, but it was certainly not optimal. I kept having to change the zoom to get any sort of accurate focus.

There's a good reason for that...as the focal lengths get longer, it takes more difficult feats of lens design and more expensive glass to achieve good image quality.
How often do you expect to...

I had one for a couple of weeks during my long search for a plane-spotting lens. It's a compromise...it's the cheapest 400mm zoom out there, and it's also the smallest by a significant margin. Like...
What lens are you using now? The kit lens? How much cropping are you doing?
I'm going through the same decision-making process right now...I've got a bunch of other lenses up for sale that will hopefully result in me having enough money for either of these.
The 24-70...
Thanks!
It actually isn't HDR....I shot a five-exposure bracket expecting to do HDR, but there wasn't enough contrast in the scene for the HDR to add anything. This single exposure (which the...
I'm not sure Central Park counts as "nature", but this is one of my favorite shots I've taken...

Depends on what kind of pictures you want. I can tell you about the skyline spots, most of which are just outside Manhattan.
There are two great spots for Lower Manhattan. From the west...
Hoya's Pro 1 series are excellent filters, probably on the same level as B+W. Their generic filters, however, are not nearly as good. The UV filters will make your pictures soft, the ND filters will...
I posted this on FredMiranda, but I figured I should put it here as well...I'm selling some gear to try to put the scratch together for a 24-105 or 24-70 (haven't decided which, yet)

The 70-200 f/4. Stunning image quality, fast focusing, good build quality, compact size, and it's the least expensive L lens. It's only f/4, but that's plenty for shooting outside.
The Tamron...
Sports shooting on a budget is tough.
Before you decide on lenses, you need to see what focal lengths you need, and how much light you're shooting in. If you can get close to a small field and...
Wow, lots more info here...thanks! It's kinda what I was afraid of...full-frame would help half of my photographic interests and hurt the other half...
I'm wondering if, when my time comes,...
I'm curious about the advantages of shooting full-frame versus shooting crop. I've read various assertations that switching from a 40D to a 5D is like upgrading all of your glass, that a crop body...
A lens like this would be a terrible replacement for the 100-400. I saw a guy shooting with a Nikon 200-400 f/4 handheld a couple of weeks ago...it did NOT look pleasant...one of the great things...
Amazing...I never expected to see an even slightly negative review of this lens. I am in awe of your ability to remain objective in the presence of such gear. :)
(The helicopter shot is probably...
I traded my Canon 70-200 f/4 for a Sigma 100-300 f/4 and never looked back. The image quality of the 100-300 isn't quite as good as the 70-200 f/4, but it's close. The range is much better for me....
+1 about lensrentals...Roger has been very helpful to me a couple of times when I've PMed him on fredmiranda to ask about his experience with certain gear...saving me a chunk of money...even though I...
Cute kid...
If you're just starting out with serious photography, you need to figure out your style...everyone's "where they should be" is different, and most peoples' are changing constantly....
