I have had some fun with the R5 and flight shots of the pair of Tanagers in my yard. The key is that I noticed they have a very consistent flight path to and from the feeders....

Sony A1 does pretty well for a high res high end camera.....I might have switched but for my Canon lenses

A possible solution for this image is Topaz Sharpen AI.

Good explanations have already been given for the variance in your images.....I think there is a good possibility...
Owls are around my place but not easy to see and even harder to image, in fact my house is adjacent to Owl Creek:rolleyes:

I would agree.....it's probably more the effect of tough conditions with little contrast between the subject and things around it.
I have not had a ton of birds in flight experience with the R5...
