On the second picture you also need to straighten out your horizon. It's one of those little things that make a picture not look quite right, even if you're not sure why.
Boy, I hemmed and hawwed over this one for a long time myself. In the end, the combination of fast glass, IS, ideal "walk around" range and excellent IQ on the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 won out over my desire...

I'm more inclined to say 1st, 1st (with some cropping) and 1st (with some cloning). For the 1st image in the second group, I would crop some off the top and from the right to bring both focal...
I have my focus point selector mapped to the eight-way on the the back of my 40D; center click picks the center point and the AF button resets.
Damn expensive addiciti... I mean hobby, isn't it? [:P]
