Can someone explain in "layman's terms" the simplest way to post process an image to an HDR format.

For HDR you have to start with at least 3 photos taken (best in RAW) at three different exposures (try braketing)


and best to mount on a tripod. Then you need to use photomatix software to combine the photos to an HDR image this can be done in


photoshop wbut not as well.


Best place to learn this in on the Kelby training vidoes (there is one on HDR processing) watch it.

You can do pseudo-HDR with a single image--so long as you convert it to a 16 (or higher) bit image.


The pseudo HDR ends up looking similar to what you might achieve by
doing a lot of contrast/saturation/histo tweaks, but HDR software like
Photomatix or HDRTools does "microcontrast" and "microsmoothing" that
produces localized results.


Most of the time when I have a single image, running it through HDR
processing (I use Photomatix) doesn't do much. And I've achieved some
spectacular results from doing HDR with only 2 source images.





An example:
