    What flash should I get?

I shoot a Canon XS and I am looking into purchasing a flash. What would be best for me? I shoot a lot of indoor eventsand macro. Price is an issue, but a major issue.

Canon Speedlite 430EX II, version I is another good choice, if you can find it.

Elaborate more on what kind of events you're shooting. The 580EX II can show some significant advantages over the 430s if recycle time is an issue, and the 430 can be limiting if you do much vertical ("portrait orientation") shooting of subjects lower than you and you like bounce flash.
We're a Canon/Profoto family: five cameras, sixteen lenses, fifteen Profoto lights, too many modifiers.

I say go 580EX II. If you can wait for the rebates to come back around it will only be $100 or so more.

Besides being more powerful and all the obvious reasons, my biggest reason...I've dropped both. 580EX II = Fine. 430EX = Pieces.

Promaster 7500 EDF. Almost all the features of the 580EXII with the
range of the 430EXII for about $220. Excellent flash, off-camera
    shooting without a speedlite transmitter

i'm still learning how to fully use it, but the flash is very quick, and silent
