    Canon 160E flash compatibility

    Hi,

I have an EOS 50D, and relatively inexperienced with using the flash. I was walking past a camera exchange store, and saw an old film flash unit - the 160E - for £10. Being a poor student, I snapped this up as it's in great condition. Can I even use this with the 50D, or have I been too hasty? If so, what are the issues I face? The only thing I know is that TTL was designed for film and not digital cameras.

    Thanks.

The TTL function will not work. I think it will fire full power with your camera. The auto focus assist beam might work. I could not find anything on the trigger voltage. You have to be carful with that when using older flash units. If the trigger voltage is too high it could fry the electronics in your 50D. With the right wireless slave unit you could use it off camera but it is pretty low power flash.

Here is some info: Canon 160E

Thanks for that - I wasn't hopeful, but for the money it was worth taking a chance. If it's firing at full power I guess I can compensate with exposure by a stop or so. I haven't put it on the camera yet as I suspected that there may be some voltage compatibilty issues - anybody know anything more on this?

    Thanks again.
