    HELP - is this safe?

    Hi all,

I just got my new (!) Crumpler Karachi Outpost Camera Backpack and love it. I have one question – if I leave my 7D attached to my 300 f/4L IS USM in the backpack, will that constant connection stress and weaken the contacts (between the lens and body)? Is there anything else I should beware of?

thanks for all your help. it really saves my a*s.

I've left a 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS connected to an XTi (residing in a backpack) for extended periods of time without damage to the camera. Cameras are made to withstand a good amount of stress at that connection point. Of course, there could always be a problem with any part of your camera, but I honestly don't think that behavior will harm it.

Don't fall backwards onto the pavement while wearing the backpack with the camera inside.

Plan ahead: decide what you will do if a Florida alligator grabs the pack in his jaws - will you fight for your gear, or just slip off the straps and run. []

On a (slightly) more serious note, have a great trip!

I am not sure whether it matters or not, but I usuallyvelcro one of the horizontal dividers right where the lens ends, so the camera and lens can rest on it.

As a mechanical engineer who tests commercial products for a living, the EF mount is very robust. The large diameter allows it to withstand almost anything you could do to it. I would think that taking lenses on and off would cause more stress on the mount and the electrical contacts than have the extra stress on the mount to leave it attached.

Thanks Sean, Pete, John, and Steven. That more or less answered my question. BTW the Crumpler Karachi Outpost is $%#@ AWESOME!

I need to take a deep breath.
