It is a good lens. The IS version has improved optics over the non-IS version, as you can see here, but also costs twice as much.Mouse over the image to switch to the IS lens.
For real-world images on a crop camera, here's a link to the results from pixel-peeper, for 50D + 70-200mm f/4L.These are user submitted full-res images. Some aren't sharp, some are. he EXIF is provided so you can judge whether it's worth looking at for sharpness before clicking through. ie: A jumping horse at 1/125s is probably not sharp due to motion blur, while the 1/800s jumping horse is probably a good test of the lens. The tiger on page 2 looks quite good. When you click and it goes to flickr, right click on the image and choose view full size.
