    Spotting scope for birding

Hi everyone. Since I can't afford a 500mm f/4, I'm thinking about getting a nice scope to watch the birds. Any recommendations? I'm happy to spend $200-$300 but not much more. This would be used for wildlife almost exclusively. I live on a river with waterfowl. I would also use it with my manfrotto legs but ideally I could handhold too (although I recognize that could be tough). Thanks!
