Image of the Week...Week#7

Entry period will be from Sunday to Sunday, with this week closing on the 4th August.
Only two categories; Portrait and Landscape
Portrait- Anything with eyes, people, animals
Landscape- Country, town, city, sea, abstract, things (water drops, smoke, flowers, candles and so on)

Each category will have a winner each week and this week judged hopefully by Brant, who I think is a top photographer, a great bloke and I'm not quite ready to see those good looking selfies' he took this week come in and win everything.

Then a poll to sort out monthly winners.

This photo is from last week, on the same hike where I photographed the marmot. I didn't have a tripod and it was a bit windy, so I had to keep shooting until I got something sharp. Fortunately I had a big memory card, and the flower wasn't going anywhere. In the background is a charred log from a 10 year-old forest fire... I'm not sure if you can tell that is what it is, from the bokeh.

Actually, the "little planet panoramas" I've shot were all created using a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM (at 17mm). While you can do these panoramas with little gear, if you have a way of controlling the camera so that it shoots from the nodal point, then stitching in PS is much (MUCH) easier.

I created my first one using my tripod with a standard ballhead. However, I found that later ones I tried never seemed to line up quite right. After a lot of research, I ended up buying a Manfrotto 303Plus Panoramic Head and a shoe-mount dual bubble level. The head makes it substantially easier to create the panoramic images. I shoot 18 overlapping photographs (every 20 degrees) for post-processing in Photoshop CS6.

You can do these with a fisheye, but I haven't tried it yet - so I can't really give any input on it. :-)

OK, so my basic caption to the South Coyote Buttes area is "are you sure Scotty didn't beam you to a different planet" the other caption might be "geologic mayhem"
