He looks thrilled to be there. I'm guessing some sort of figure skating event (looks to me like an ice rink). Maybe he thought it was Stanley Cup semifinals before he arrived.

I'm not certain he would be excited about the Stanley Cup semis, it's hockey after all (not trying to offend my neighbors to the north, merely jesting)

He's using it as a wide-angle. Like binoculars, a backwards telephoto works as a wide-angle. [A]
