There may not be a price drop. Sometimes, when Canon has introduced a new version of a lens, the price went UP. Case in point is the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II: the original was (and still is, for now) selling for $1200, the new version is $2199. A similar thing happened with the 24mm f/1.4L II, as I recall, and may have happened with the 16-35mm f/2.8L II.


The current B&H price of the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is $1900, $1700 with rebate. That's less than the guestimates other members have made for the "II" lens.
