Portrait of my Dad sporting a traditional look.

devsalvi: If I might suggest something--the shot would have been better if you had lit your father's eyes. Next time, place the mainlight a little lower so that the light isn't blocked by the subject's brow ridge. People wearing glasses can be tricky to light, but if you play around with the angles you can make it work quite nicely.

The eyes are what draw us into a traditional portrait--and having well-lit eyes (with catchlights) helps a great deal.

    Thanks Sean.

For this shot i had the 580exii on the camera with a bounce on it and pointing directly upwards. And you are right, it gets tricky when glasses are involved.

I really appreciate your suggestions. Will give them a shot next time.

If on-camera's what you've got, you might try a piece of white foam core (or some other flat, white surface) and place it off to the side. Then you can bounce your flash off that. Else, you could place your subject next to a white wall. Cheap and easy does it a lot of the time (just don't tell my girlfriend...she'll wonder where all my money's going).

    hehe ... no i wont

I was visiting India when i took this pic. so i didnt carry my entire gear. This pic was clicked as a candid picture. it turned out to be a good portrait pose. i dont shoot professionally. so usually its the wall or my other flash which i use as a slave.

Portrait pictures can bring so much satisfaction even if its a steep learning curve B-)
