Looking to buy one of the Canon L-lens and need some suggestion

I am looking to buy one of following lens:


Canon 14mm f2.8 USM II or 16-35mm f2.8 USM II or 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM. I would like to only choose one and for my shooting styles:


50% Walk around, peopleand Landscape (outdoor and indoor)


35% Wildlife and Birds


15% Sports (outdoor and indoor)


Not sure which one I should buy? please refer the camera and lens I've got currently.


Currently using following Camera and Lens:


Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 500D


Canon 17-40mm f4 L USM


Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS USM


Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L USM


Canon 70-200mm f4 L IS USM


Canon 50mm f1.8 II


Canon Ext 1.4x

Looks like you already have top notch stuff already for walkaround, people, and landscape work.


For wildlife, birds, and sports, your current gear is probably a bit short. Instead of your current shortlist of the 14mm F2.8, 16-35mm F2.8, or 70-200 F2.8, you might find a longer zoom such as the 100-400 F4.5-5.6 IS or the 300 F4 IS more useful. Your ownership of the 1.4X Extender could also be used with the 300 F4 IS to make it a 420mm F5.6 with the 5D MkII or a 672mm F5.6 on the 500D.


Both of these lenses would be more suited for outdoor work but since you have a 5D MkII, which has great low light/high ISO performance, they will also be good for indoor work as well.

I will add that I am quite jealous of Vinces current line up! My vote is for the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS.

Since Vince is saying 50% walk-around and 35% wildlife, I assume he cares about mobility and longer telephoto.


How about this EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM?

Out of your choices I'd go with the 16-35 over the 14mm, then sell the 17-40. In my opinion the difference between 14 and 16 isn't that large and the IQ is pretty close if you compare them on Bryan's charts. Plus the range to 35.


But real world, I'd agree with Mark and say go for the 100-400 to fill your wildlife needs and the 17-40 is really good lens for you landscapes.

The reason I am thinking of those lens because I am trying to get best quality in different lighting conditions (also stop motion), therefore I am not sure if thats worth to buy 16-35mm f2.8 II (more wide? compare to 17-40mm) or 70-200mm f2.8 IS (compare to 70-200mm f4 IS)? If its not really make different then 100-400mm will be good


Maybe you guys got more exp?
