    Cat Photo

This is our cat, Eowyn. She loves to sleep on the arm of the couch in our family room. I managed to capture this shot one evening and just got lucky. As a novice starting out in the field I was pleased with this photo.

Thanks John - I think that is the first cat picture in the forum! It looks very peaceful.

    Nice one!

Just out of curiosity, what did you use for lighting in this shot?

I agree with the comment that we tend to have more pictures of cats than family. Unless of course you count your pets as family.

Here is one from the archives, a good example of using a wide aperture to center focus on a subject. I don't care where you start looking at this photo, you will always end up looking into the cat's eyes!

    Taken with a 70-200mm zoom at 200mm f/2.8, hand-held with IS on.

    Thanks for commenting, Anthony.

Lighting is a table lamp sitting to the left and slightly behind Eowyn. I used a Canon 30D body with a Tamron zoom set at 80mm and stopped down to 5.6f. Exposure was 1/50 sec. If I recall correctly I used AV.

I shot about ten photos, varying my settings to get this one. Believe me, this was a lucky shot; I was just experimenting and trying to learn to shoot in low light without using a flash.

I don't know about you guys, but it's always an extra challenge trying to get any of my cats to sit still!
