Here's my view - I don't care how many shots it takes to get the look I'm going for, as long as I get it (or something reasonably close). In the days of film, such a technique would have been cost prohibitive. With digital, I'm only sacraficing a little more of my time and a bit more wear on my shutter. If I shoot 80 shots, and the customer really likes 5 of them, then I've likely given them more than they would have gotten at a chain studio for less money.

That little bit of light from high above rear, I find, serves to complete the seperation of thethe subject from the background. 3D Baby!!
The side light is awesome and I think positioned well. With a hair light you could pull the side light around a little and turn it down.
For a two light setup, you nailed it. Kim (my wife) and I recently did some outdoor bridal portraits and that setup worked really well.
Love the mottled grey backdrop. Where'd you get it? The next investment I make in photo equipment needs to be in backdrops.

It was actually a 3 light shot. I'm not a fan of the direct hair light. It tends to make things look a little glam and not what I was going for.
I normally would have gotten the side light up a little higher to hit more on top of the head but the space wouldn't allow it. I used a Ray Flash for a fill to give it some dimension and 36" Softlighter II for Key. All powered by 580EXIIs.
The background is just a black seamless. i think the combo of the ring light and the soflighter give it the mottled look.

Still loving that Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 wide angle. Today, however, I got a new toy to go with it--the Delkin Fat Gecko Camera Mount. I think this was the most fun I've ever had doing a self-portrait.
strobist: 1 Canon 580EX, 1/2 power, 1/2 CTO gelled, positioned to my right, diffused by a Fong Lightsphere. 1 Vivitar 285, 1/16 power, 1/2 CTO gelled, laying in the back seat pointed at the ceiling, bare. Flashes and camera triggered via Cybersyncs. Camera attached to hood using a Delkin Fat Gecko camera mount.
