Galen Rowell did for color what Ansel Adams did for black and white. In addition to being an exceptional photographer and accomplished mountaineer, he was a great writer and inspirational teacher. I have never been formally educated in photography. Reading Rowell's books was like getting an advanced degree in the artistic and technical facets of the medium, yet his writing never was never textbookish. Mountain Light was my bible of photography that I read and reread numerous times. My dog-eared copy is filled with highlights and notes. Galen Rowell's Vision and Galen Rowell's Inner Game(both compilations of articles he wrote for Outdoor Photography) are also well worn and occupy important spots on my book shelf.
