i enjoy (and have used) Bryan's reviews, so it's time to share some results.


This was taken this morning just outside Boulder, CO. Call it 'Colonel Blackbird'. C&C welcome.

I never saw anything like this, the bird, pose,bg,post and composition look very different, very interesting shot, and I like it!

Thanks for looking! The edits in DPP to Colonel Blackbird including cropping, some minor Tone Curve adjustments, a little contrast adjustment to bring out the dark side eye and some more breast feathers, and the slightest hint of Saturation increase (+1). Here is the original:

The funny thing is that it was taken from the front seat of my car. i've seen people say that you should never have anything man made in a bird shot, but these blackbirds naturally choose fences and such to display on so it seems quite appropriate

Nice shot Shea I don't think I've ever even seen a humming bird's nest before. my only real criticism is the dof doesn't cover the entire nest minor but a little distracting, looks like it focused a little more toward the back of the bird.

Well if you look at the ISO you can deduce that I'm already running low on light (max aperture in this configuration btw), and have you ever tried to photograph one inch in a windy tree @ 420mm? I was lucky to get this much and participated in the show & tell section as I was not seeking a critique anyway. No hard feelings, just what is. -Shea

I'm seeing that a lot of folks are using the 300 f4 w/ 1.4 TC. I am considering purchasing this combination. Any of you find yourselves wishing you had gone with the 400 5.6 instead? Specifically in the arena of your bird shots.


That probably deserves another thread, but i figured the two folks I saw would say something short and sweet or even message me as to not fill this thread with another threads topic.
