I have the 580EXII and love that flash. It has never let me down on having enough power and I don't find the size of it to be any problem. I've never used the 480, so can't tell you if that would be sufficent. I tend to go with the best I can afford and all the reviews I've read on the 580EXII said it's truly an amazing flash. I don't do anything fancy with mine like tweak the settings, just leave it on TTL and use a Gary Fong flash diffuser. Check out his diffuser if you haven't done so. It's not "pocket size" but it really does a nice job of controlling the harsh effects that flashes can produce.

Go for the 580EXII. I originally purchased the 420EX but it didn't have enough power for my needs. I ended up getting a 580EX and the pair of flashes now work great as master and slave.

In your case, if you find you need a second flash, you can get a second 580EXII with more power.
