What Do You Use for Background Set-ups?

Hi Everyone,


I am in the midst of ordering my firstfew lighting items for portrait & macro photography (umbrella, Alzo digital Porta Flash mini softbox, etc. etc) and I was wondering what others use for their backgrounds for either macro or portraits? Cloud Dome Infinity Board for macro work maybe? What about portraits? I am looking for items that are fairly small (easy to store away & set-up) since this is just to use in my home not a studio. For portraits, I am tired of my doors, furniture etc being in the background of all myfamily photos even if it is blurred.

Suggestions please!

For a black background, I have used black felt (purchased at walmart) and made a PVC frame, Total cost about 20 bucks---you could probably find other material to suit your needs.

If you go to eBay, you can find many different backgrounds (muslin types, etc.). Often, the sizes vary, anywhere from 5 feet wide, up to 20 feet, and come in a myriad of designs and colors.


Black velvet also works. It tends to gather white specs on it, but it can be brushed clean with a sticky roller.

I've used both for a lot of shoots and they work really well. The stand is 13 pounds and it comes with it's own well designed case. The 10' x 12' size backgrounds work perfectly for me. I have black, white and twighlight blue.

I will check it out! Maybe this will be a cheaper route to go and still get a Westcott stand from B&amp;H. If I go with black, we have plenty of sticky rollers around here with having 3 dogs! [:P]

Thanks, Bob! I have bought some material and put it on foam board but balancing it was a challange! The PVC frame is a great idea!
I have also used colored poster board for some macro work.
