The 200mm f/2.8L II USM is a wonderful lens - excellent image quality, inconspicuous (it's the longest focal length black lens made by Canon). For portraits, DoF at 200mm f/2.8 is very thin, and the lens has very pleasing bokeh. If you want 200mm, don't need IS, and can live without the flexibility of the zoom, that's the lens to get. There are two lenses with better IQ at 200mm than the EF 200mm f/2.8L II prime - the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II zoom and the 200mm f/2L prime. The200mm f/2.8L II costs less than 1/4 what the zoom costs, and less than 1/8 what the 200mm f/2L costs.


I had one, really liked it, and sold it (today!!) only because I recently bought the EF 70-200mm f/2.8<span style="color: red;"]L IS II.
