Yes, it is the "shore" or "bank" of the lake. The bird was in a very shaded spot close tothe shore so it appears nearly black, I also darkened it a little in processing to make some distracting background elements less visible.

Thanks for the info Joel. When looking at a different angle I could see more of the bank.
If I'm honest, I can't say I really like such a background, but it could be a lot worse.
Better luck next time. I do think you did a great job though, can't choose a background in these circumstances.
