Thank you, it's going to take a while for me to digest all that info while I research but I will think very carefully about everything you've said. I really hope Google picks up on your post as I think it'd be very useful for other people too.
unjx - hmm, that particular model is 800 grams heavier than the Manfrotto so I doubt it's for me. But I'll definitely take a good look at the other Berlebach tripods.

But I know that weight isn't the only consideration - I gather a tripod is probably more of an investment than any of the rest of my camera gear.
