Hmm I don't think you could. It's definitely made for separating camera gear rather than acting as a true backpack. But they have other models that zip all the way down in front with removeable panels, you might want to check those out. Mine has 3 distinct sections: laptop back, camera body/lens bottom, accessory top.

I found buried in the product description that the insert comes out of the bottom so that it does become more of a book-bag. Have you done that?

Sounds familiar but I haven't had the bag long enough or had the need arise to try it. I can look over the weekend but the bottom of that top section felt more solid from what I remember...

I just bought it, and nice does not quite describe it. This bag is GREAT! (of course it is my first high end camera bag, so I may be a little fanboy-ish). It holds my current gear (See 1st post) perfectly, with space for a flash and maybe another small lens stacked on the 50mm. My 150mm Sigma and 70-210 Canon would not fit on the camera body, unless placed sideways, but that is OK. The top pocket is HUGE, significantly bigger than I expected. I can tote 3 good sized hard covers around in there easily. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

(And I got it with a free NatGeo branded monopod made by Manfrotto)
