It's not the easiest way to do things Bob, but if I need to use a higher shutter speed than 1/200 (5D2) and I'm using off camera speedlites I just frame the shot a bit wider. Then you can just crop off the curtain shadow in the frame and it's back to normal.
Not quite the same as having HSS but I have used it at times.
Just a different way of doing things I suppose if you're interested.
