Wayne, I understand that Canon's refurbished goods are similar in nature and it's why, even at the same price point, I would give preference to the refurbished unit. In addition, Adorama warrants their refurbished gear for a full year as opposed to the 90 day warranty that they used to offer.

    EDIT:

Refurbished items I have purchased from Adorama with great success:

    • Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera
    • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens
    • Canon Speedlite 430EX Flash

All that may be true, but when you eventually go to sell the camera, a used refurbished model is worth much less, maybe more than $300 less, so in the total life cycle, it can cost more.

I've also heard of buyers getting refurb cameras with intermittent problems that Canon did not manage to fix. By the time they ship it back and forth, they are extremely frustrated and didn't save anything at all. People send back cameras that they feel have too many hot pixels, have AF issues, these may be within Canon Spec, but I wouldn't want to get one.

My only point is that there is some risk, and the savings should be enough to entice you to take it.

I'm considering trading in a dead body using the customer loyalty program, I will have to decide what that cost savings point is, but saving$300 on a refurb 1D MK IV is not it.

That is supposition and I do not believe it to be true. Please list a retailer that has an example of this so that we may all see.

Pure hearsay. Rumors especially negative ones run rampant beyond actual facts and we all know this. If you listen long enough you will be able to hear all of the "evidence" that you want provided to backup a claim. Please sight a specific example that what you are claiming here is correct. The same can all be said of brand new cameras

When the same warranty applies to a refurbished there is no more risk than if you were buying new. If the warranty is not same/equal to a new item you are very correct!!

Could you please give me the location of this information for the dead body plan, I would like to see it and where it is applicable, we all are looking for less expensive ways to purchase equipment for our hobby. As you have stated refurbished is not for you, however there are many situations where it makes perfect sense for someone else should they decide to examine and go that route. Yes we are lucky enough to have won the lottery, to be able too live in our great country and be able to have such varied opinions and be able to express them.

    Godspeed
