Monopod question that I'm getting off craigslist

Hi Rich -


I very much agree with what you are saying. For the zoo trip tomorrow, I have no choice but to use my ballhead but would like to find a tilt head with quick release for future use. I am just not finding one that will do a good enough job of supporting a 7D and 100-400mm lens.


Do you think the Manfrotto 234RC will do the trick. I also do not want to spend more than $70 for one.

I've used the Manfrotto 234RC on a Manfrotto 694CX monopod with my gripped 7D and 100-400mm lens, and it works just fine.

The ballhead will be fine for temporary use, especially for smaller lenses such as the 100-400mm lens. What I was describing seems to be more of a problem with heavier Supertelephoto lenses, when you loosen the ballhead knob, the lens tries to find its own center of gravity, within an uncontrolled spherical plane. In other words it flops downward and to the side simultaneously.


As far as the 234RC (Quick Release) vs. the standard 234 tilt head, I prefer the non quick release regarding Manfrotto because it feels more stable and solid to me.Ialso really prefer Arca Swiss style releases.The mouting platform on the standard 234 is also wider and it's cheaper too.

The possibility of the lens flopping around is why I choose to not have a head at all. I found the rigidness of the monopod by itself makes it easier to maneuver.

I'm in absolute agreement with your philosophy. I don't use a head on my monopod for most of my shooting, however if someone is shooting macro, BIF, an airshow, or shooting sports from the stands, and they need the tilt feature, then I would rather see them get a tilt head than a ballhead.


I know what you mean about the rigidity of going headless [:O], but I must say that if you ever find a need for a tilt head, then the RRS Monopod head is 100% rock solid, without any lateral flex whatsoever.

Received it today and it looks like it is going to work out pretty good for my needs! The tilt head will take some getting use to since it is much looser than the tilt onmy ballhead that I have on my tripod but after awhile I may come to prefer the quicker movement of this one!
