    Hi Rusty.

You have a nice setup. If it were me, I would go with the 7D. The 17-55 f/2.8 IS and the 70-200 are excellent lenses. Getting the 35mm would be great and would give you great photos but as Bryan puts it in his review of the 7D (I'm paraphrasing), "...the 7D is best 1.6x DSLR Canon has made to date".

    buuut.....

Keep in mind that the 35L will actually be ~53mm on your 30D so try shooting for a while on your 17-55mm at full zoom and see what you think.

    Tough decision, good luck..

That is incorrect. The 35L on a full frame would be like a 56mm lens on a crop sensor camera. However, when you're comparing the same focal length on the same crop sensor camera, they have (nearly) identical views. A 35mm f/1.4 L on a crop sensor will have the same field of view as the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS at 35mm on the same camera.

Alternative proposal, buy 3 great primes for about the cost of the 35L:
    • Sigma 30mm f/1.4
    • Sigma or Canon 50mm f/1.4
    • Canon 85mm f/1.8

Full disclosure, I have the 7D and love it! However I loved my Rebel XT before it too... When I look back at my favorite pictures of the kids a large percentage of them involved apertures larger than f/2.8. I have both the Sigma 30mm and Canon 85mm (haven't used either 50mm) and they are on my 7D all the time.

You obviously can't go wrong w/ the 7D or the 35L alone but this alternative giving you the 50mm and 85mm focal lengths will help you create some stunning pictures of your kid(s). Don't underestimate the portability factor either. Your existing lenses are obviously top quality but they are also heavier and bulkier and these sleek primes are more outing-friendly (and easier for smaller-handed and/or less-experienced folks to handle, potentially getting you in some of the pictures!!).

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!!!

I think these primes are great lenses and value. instead of getting only 7D, you can go with 50D/60D and any one or two of these primes. just my 2 cents in case you haven't thought about that.

Thank you for all the responses. I think getting a new body is the way to go or us. Whether it be a 50D, 60D, or 7D. I
