What I have done in the past was stow all my cables, batteries, flashes and other non-essential equipment into my luggage which left me with only my camera body and lenses. I did keep my camera battery with me, you never know when an image may present itself. Also, you may wish to register said equipment where possible, however; in Toronto, I was told by Customs that they recommend having receipts of equipment!
