    Generally speaking you meter for the background and "fill" in the shadows on faces like in an outdoor portrait at high noon. ETTL does a pretty good job with this but if you have time setting your flash manually will give you more consistant results.

    In ETTL I do the same, dial in -1 or -2 flash exposure compensation. Most of the time I am in manual and meter with a Sekonic L-358 Flash Master Meter. It allows me to meter the ambient and flash.
