I highly recommend trying to find a decent used Canon 5D MKi on ebay if possible, and the ultra cool 35mm 1.4L along with the fantastic 135mm f/2 L. these are very fantastic and should cover many areas that may arise! I have yet to master the canon 5D mki and 35mm 1.4 L , but they are highly capable of produce fantastic images as well as the 135mm f/2! i would say each should be about 1k for the 5d $850 for the135 f/2 L and around 1k-1200 for the neat 35mm f/1.4 L. Good luck with your choices, and despite its age the elder 5D is highly capable plus of course fullframe!

Thank you all very much for your advice. I do think the 70-200 2.8 is the right lens for me long term, but probably not for te safari. So I think I

I think that sounds great (but then, maybe I'm a little biased [:P] ). Good luck with the rest of the planning and have a great trip!

Thought I'd close this off with what I actually did! I got a manufacturer referb 7D (12 months warrenty) for £800 and a new 17-55 f2.8 for £600. Instead of renting I've picked up a second hand 100-400L off ebay and plan to sell it again after the trip (assuming I can part with it) this will hopefully not cost me more than £50 in postage and ebay fees.

I got an early model (98) but I think a good one. it is cosmetically flawless (looks hardly used) and I've done my best to test the image quality, focusing and IS all look as good as I can tell.

The first is a crop, the cats head was enter frame

    This one is uncropped

Thank you all for your advice.

I'm now tempted to get a wide angle zoom to capture night skies and wide vistas...
