From what I know the some of those lens you just mentioned are actually suposed to little sharper than the newer version becuase they don't have the extra optics from IS. But Bryan didn't shoot ISO crops of them so you'll have to google and find other comparisons out there to confirm it.
Thats myfeel about IS, most of the time I need a very high shutter speen any way so IS dosen't wouldn't benefit me that much. Even if they were a little softer the money you safe often compensates for that difference, but that depends on how much left overcash you have[:P]
