Last one there is great, I always see birds in a different light when you freeze them like that....good luck with the puffins, they are quick and small, but usually hang around in groups, (they do around here anyway), and dont forget, their beaks are brighter in the breeding season

Very nice pose and composition cronpl. Since the exposure is not that great, maybe you should try and convert it to B&W, and play up the whole romantic-heart thing that's going on.

So no pix of her, but I did have some luck w/a pair of Pileated woodpeckers, relatively rare bird in eastern Massachusetts and a tough subject to capture cleanly.

Nice pose and attitude on this one, especially in difficult lighting conditions.

    Hi JJ,

    Nice composition at700mm!

Do you find that you use the 1.4X a lot and if you had to do it again would you opt for the 500mm or 600mm lens?

Are you using a tripod or monopod?

    Is this heavily cropped?

You may want to see if you can reduce the noise in the blue sky, and perhaps get rid of those 3 vertical branches in the bottom right of the frame.

Thanks for the comments Rich... I will give B&W a try. Although, short of the "Convert to B&W" command in PSE I am not to adept at B&W conversions.

yeah, I know what do you mean. my dream set up should be 1DIV and the 600mm version II or the 800mm with those new TCs. but I have to consider the weight and especially the money issue[]

500mm version I with TCs is the "cheapest" way to go( unlike Fast Glass, I can't live without the AF and the cheaper non IS version is the alternative choice IMO) and a lot lighter than the 600mm I.

I use Benro tripod and it's wimberley type head, it's another cheaper alternative way, it works pretty good to me so far. I never use a monopod, but I guess it should be better when shooting BIF.

I don't think it's a heavily cropped picture but I don't remember how much I cropped, I got check the original one when got home.

yes, I agree. I wish there was better colorful BG, I didn't like the blue sky anyway, so I was lazy to work on the BG very much[]

    thanks Rich for your comments!

It's nothing exotic, very cropped, and probably the laziest way to get a bird shot, but this guy was so fat, when I saw him hopping around on our backyard fence, I had to try.
