High ISO Noise Reduction custom function

    I'm befuddled.

I've noticed in the past, and I noticed it today, that my RAW files, once loaded into DPP, have luminance noise reduction set to 2 as default. I have my DPP set to "use settings from camera". I have my camera's high ISO noise reduction turned OFF.

    How is this happening?

It's very frustrating, because as some of you may remember, I'm in this neverending quest for sharpness in my shots with my XSi, and especially when viewed at 100%, the difference in sharpness between luminance noise reduction at 2 and at 0 is HUGE.

How can I fix this so that my shots stop getting loaded into DPP with a luminance noise reduction setting already applied to them?

Thanks so much everyone for your time!

    Hi Angelo,

Thanks for the reply! Yes, there is a setting in DPP, you can choose a default application of noise reduction, or you can "use settings from camera" which I assume would be influenced by whether or not you have custom functions on your camera applied.

The latter is how I have it set, and my custom functions for noise reduction are set to OFF, but I

What version of DPP are you running? Have you updated lately? If not, maybe you should.

I ask because your problem sounds a lot like something Bryan mentioned in his EF 24mm f/1.4L II review, where he stated, "What I discovered was not a lens issue with the first copy, but a bug in Canon's Digital Photo Pro software. DPP was adding "Luminance Noise Reduction = 2" to all of my 1Ds III (and other Canon DSLR) images shot with noise reduction turned off. Even those I shot long ago. Apparently this bug was introduced in a recent update as DPP has never done this in the past."

Wow, Neuro, great find. I remember reading this a while ago now that I see it again.

    Hi Alex.

Thanks for pointing that one out. I guess I have to check again my settings too. As what Neuro found out, I believe I got the DPP 3.9ish version but I still got that luminance equal to two (2).

Hmmm... Well, I gotta check my default settings when I get home.

    Keep us posted.

This is a somewhatof aside topic, but have you tried DxO? I use it and it is the best noise reduction and RAW processing program I have tried. It'smuch better than Light Room, CS4 or Photoshop Elements. It's about two stopps bettter than DPP but it has much better colors and dynamic range at high ISO's.

Plus it's has much more controll of your image and corrects for third partylens defects, distortion, vigeneting, CA, lens softness. The CA correction is the best that I have tried by farand also the easiest to use. It just has two sliders, one forintesity and one for the size of the CAand thats it.

Here is a link to downloadDxOtrial http://www.dxo.com/us/photo/free_trial_version

Here is a link to learn about the features of DxO http://www.dxo.com/us/photo/dxo_optics_pro/features

I rarely ever use DPP, especially since I started using Photoshop Lightroom. But I decided to check this problem out and found that it was applying both Luminance and Chrominance Noise Reduction even when I have "Apply camera settings" checked in my DPP preferences. I download and installed the most recent version and checked again. It was still applying noise reduction even though I have confirmed and the metadata even shows that I have both Long Exposure and High ISO Noise Reduction Disabled. I decided to un-check "Apply Camera Settings" and check "Set as Default" setting my own default values to zero. For the changes to take effect I shut it down and restarted DPP. The new setting worked.

Why isn't DPP using the Camera Setting? another bug even in the latest version!

Does anyone have any idea on this? This is the basic "solution" that I came to, because despite what I tried (I am running the latest version), I couldn

So I just set a default like tkerr suggests. I don't like this fix because obviously it's nice to have your in-camera noise reduction working whenever it's needed instead of having to do it all manually later. At least, that's how I feel about it.

Makes you wonder, if it's not even reading your cameras noise reduction settings, what else isn't it reading / applying?
I knew there was a reason I don't use it anymore.
