I have never really tried shooting birds before since my longest lens was a 105. Just received my Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD today. After about 20 shots I got one.
I think I am going to like this lens.

I stopped by a Heron Rookery to see if any eggs had hatched. I didn't see any chicks, in fact it seemed like all the Herons were still sitting on the nests, but I did get this shot:
