Thanks, John! I like your percentage better ...it looks like you have picked a great day! I'm looking forward to seeing some photos from your outing!Originally Posted by neuroanatomist

Well, the temp touched 60 and there was a little bit brightness this afternoon....so I thought a quick HB shoot out back was in order.
This is my first serious sit down of the season and I need to clean the cobwebs......these little buggers are much faster than I remember or maybe I've just slowed down over the winter.
7D, 500, f4.5, 1/640, ISO 800 (it wasn't terribly bright)

Bill. Great shot. I really like the motion blur int he wings in that you can still see some blurred detail...if there is such a thing. Much more productive than I've been this afternoon.[]

1.The clouds offer lighting conditions that are much easier to manage that bright daylight---nice even lighting, where bright spots and harsh shadows are limited.
2. Rain or shortly after a rain the air is clean, no haze, everything just seems a little crisper.
So, make your plans, take your trip, get out there and shoot some National Geographic quality stuff that we can all copy and hang on our walls[]

The first one looks great and I like the exposure, but I'm not sure how I feel about the black background (underexposed ambient), it almost looks too scientific for me as opposed to seeing something natural in nature, like a background from Walmart. [:P] I also like the pose and composition.
I see that you were able to light up that purple fringe in the 2nd one!
In the 3rd one, whatever you did to lighten up the orange in the background looks great! It also looks so much better when you're able to capture the bird over the flower.
Bob, I also wanted to thank you for the nice comments.

Going to the International Crane Foundation, the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Education Center (established and run by former big cat photographers), Devill's Lake State Park& Mirror Lake State Park so I hope I'll end up with some real keepers!
This will be my real first photography outing so wish me luck! []

Nice capture and motion blur on the wings. I also like the composition too.
You should consider trying Topaz Noiseware, they offer a free 30 day trial and it can really clean up the noise on the background. The sample version puts a yellow grid on the image to prevent you from using it, so try it on a copy first (I think it even makes a copy for you, just giving you a heads up), but at least you could see how it works. Noise Ninja is very good too.
