I think you're quite correct, David - it's acting as a substitute for an RC-6 remote control, independent of flash functionality, and can be used in situations where you'd otherwise use the 'normal' wireless/IR remote. Self portraits might be one example. On the downside, it's a lot harder to hide a flash in your hand when you're sitting in a group shot, compared to a remote. On the upside, it's a lot harder to misplace your flash than that tiny remote...
