Jan, did you use a ND filter for that shot? It's fantastic!

Thanks Chris! I didn't really think about it, but there was still a polarizer filter on my lens. So about 1.5-2 stops ND. Good spotting!

I was up in northern Minnesota these
last two days on Whitefish Lake near Pine River, it's one of my favorite
places to be, and after seeing all of your guys fantastic HDR photos, I
figured I'd give them a try. So here's my first HDR photo.

Nice HDR! I really like the flare in your photo. I never get such beautiful ones. It adds to the photo.

I really like that lightning shot! I think the headlights lighting up the road really adds to the shot.


What do you think about cropping some of the darkness from the left
side of the frame? Is that because the 24mm lens was wider than the
headlight angle of view?

Thanks Rich, I think you've got a good point there. There are 2 factors. 1: The 24mm was wider than the headlights reached. Plus I didn't line the camera with the headlights. I was focussed on the road. And 2: I had placed a big plastic bag over my camera and used screwed it tight between the lenshood and the lens. There was still a bit of plastic covering the right lower corner. It left a hard black spot. Therefor I used a gradient filter to make it look less obvious and I also applied it to the left side to balance it. I tried to crop the dark bits away, but that didn't really work for me.

Hey Ben. I'm quite glad you uploaded this photo to flickr, I was able to look at your metadata to see what settings you were using. The first time I did a shot like this, it was something like f/22 and the shutter was open for about two hours, it didn't work too well at all. This shot is f/5.6, shutter was open for almost 25 minutes, there is a decent amount of color editing here. But again, thanks for putting the metadata up, you saved me a lot of time.

First attempt at using a slow shutter speed for a waterfall. I can see alot I did wrong but the strong sun and dark ND filter making it impossible to see what I was even doing, I'm surprised the shot was even saveable ...

I saw this shot on facebook. I think you did a really good job with it. You sell yourself short. You are your worst critic. I personnally have never had much luck with waterfalls, not that we have that many here in south Texas.


The macro shots are great as well. Some day maybe I'll get a macro lens.
